Become a Referee
Powerchair Hockey referees play a vital role in ensuring that matches are conducted fairly, safely and in accordance with the Rules of the Game. Through their decisions, communication and match management, referees contribute to the integrity of the sport and create a positive competition environment for athletes, teams and spectators.
Referee Responsibilities
Referees are responsible for applying the Rules of the Game consistently and managing all aspects of play during competitions.
Their responsibilities include:
- Officiating matches at national and international competitions.
- Applying the IPCH Rules of the Game consistently and impartially.
- Promoting fair play, player safety and respect for the rules.
- Managing the flow of the match and making decisions under pressure.
- Communicating effectively with players, coaches, team staff and the match table.
- Working closely with fellow referees, Jury Members and other competition officials.
Referee Eligibility
To become an IPCH International Referee, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a good command of English.
- Have previous refereeing experience at national level in Powerchair Hockey or another team sport.
- Successfully complete an IPCH international referee education pathway.
Candidates can enter the international pathway through either the International Referee Course or the Referee Development Group (RDG). Both pathways include theoretical education, practical assessment and ongoing development.
Referee Skills
International referees can come from many backgrounds. Former or current players, coaches and volunteers within Powerchair Hockey may bring valuable knowledge of the sport, while experience as a referee in another team sport can also provide a strong foundation.

Accessibility & Inclusion
Powerchair Hockey also welcomes referees who use a powerchair.
Referees are assessed on their ability to apply the Rules of the Game, communicate effectively and manage matches. Positioning and officiating mechanics may be adapted where necessary to ensure referees can maintain an effective view and control of play.
International Referee Licensing
Successful candidates enter the IPCH international licensing pathway, progressing through:
C Licence → B Licence → A Licence
With experience, mentoring, education and positive feedbacks, referees can progress through the licensing pathway and officiate at increasingly high levels of international competition.
